At the beginning of 2007 there were approximately 2.6 billion mobile phone users around the world. Unlike the earliest adopters of mobile telephony, who were elite and specialized professionals, the current adopters at the time were relatively poor, and lived in the poorer countries of the world. The Mobile Development report is the outcome of the research program funded and supported by the Nokia Corporation between March and September 2006. The report explored the best developmental use of the mobile networks that were being completed in rural and remote areas around the world.
